Melbourne, Australia
Miriam Borcherdt founded munk in 1999 as a progressive women’s wear label that explores and extends upon Borcherdt’s long held preoccupation and research into form, texture and surface pattern.
After 24 collections and with sixteen years of design experience – accumulated through stints within the studios of Romeo Gilgli in Milan and John Galliano in Paris – Borchert’s work with munk has garnered editorial and critical acclaim with coverage in leading fashion and design press such as Australian Vogue, Elle, Inside Out, Oyster, Artichoke, MONUMENT and (inside).
In 2006, she co-founded and launched a flagship store The Signet Bureau with Melbourne-based shoemakers Preston Zly. Pursuing a cultural engagement, the space is intended as an experimental retail gallery with a strong focus on collaborations with local artists and jewelers (www.thesignetbureau.com).
Born in Germany with formative years spent in rural Italy, Borcherdt trained at Rhode Island School of Design in the USA where her final year collection was celebrated for its anti-consumerist thematic.
It is a socially responsive agenda that resonates with Borcherdt’s latest project working with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to create hand crafted objects.
As of 2011 Borcherdt has set aside the women’s wear label to focus entirely on the munk FELT range.
